Check Out The Mackie Big Knob Passive
Here’s a quick look at the latest piece of gear in the Puzzle Audio control room. It’s the Mackie Big Knob Passive. This is basically a switch that allows you to access and control two audio inputs and two sets of monitors (speakers).
So, where and when would you need this?
Let’s say you have a laptop and a desktop PC. Both have their own interfaces but you only have one set of monitors. The Mackie Big Knob Passive will let both computers share 1 set (or 2 sets) of monitors with ease. Simply hook up the Big Knob Passive, adjust the volume from each input device and bingo, you’re in business. If that sounded over-simple, that’s because it is. There’s no power supply required and no additional set up needed.
Best of all, the Big Knob circuitry imparts no color, noise and change to your system’s sound. It simply routes audio to where you want it between two independent systems.
Once installed, you can easily switch between your inputs and outputs with massive control over your set up. The Passive unit includes a smooth feeling Big Knob to control volume while the inputs, Mono, mute and dim buttons allow instant control to test mixes, impress clients or A/B your mix between two different monitors

Currently, my control room runs a pair of 15 year old Mackie HR624 monitors and I’m pointing this out because Mackie makes great gear. I’ve owned Mackie Mixers, HR824 monitors, the HR624’s and I’ve never had a reason to have anything but praise for the company. Everything I’ve purchased from them over the years, has been 100% reliable and in the once instance many years ago, where my 1604 Mixer lost a mic pre-amp, Mackie’s customer service was fast and flawless. These guys take your audio seriously. That’s the kind of company I like doing business with.
Mackie’s Big Knob product line includes 3 versions, beginning with the Passive, Studio and Studio+. The later both Onyx preamps and a USB interface option to allow recording directly through the Big Knob product.
This particular model, The Big Knob Passive comes with very reasonable price tag of just $69.00
The Big Knob Passive comes with a couple of accessories I should mention, including a very thoughtful replacement spring, a 3.5mm cable for attaching a phone or other compatible device, a brief but useful manual and and an authorization code to download your own copy of Traction, Mackie’s recording software. And just in case you were wondering, I have no affiliation with Mackie, nor did I receive any compensation for this mention. I’m just impressed with the quality and service I’ve received from the gear I’ve purchased and figured you might find that helpful to know. -Steve
UPDATE: I’ve had the product installed for over a year now. It’s been absolutely flawless. However, the large dial now makes a little noise during volume adjustments. It’s simply carbon build up on the contacts but at some point, I’ll probably need to have this serviced.
